Westfall’s owner, a man very much of his time and place, faces events that turn his world upside down, events brought on by an aggrieved slave in retaliation for cruel treatment. Ultimately, the owner is threatened with the loss of his income, reputation, and inheritance. Ironically, as the owner loses his sense of his own power in the struggle, the slave makes fitful gains.

The hapless blacks and imperious whites on Westfall plantation take us down a path to an end of plantation life in the Old South. The upheavals they experience presage the coming struggle. Looming before them is the war that will end the buying, selling, and exploitation of an entire class and race of people.
